St Andrew's College, Christchurch.

The two touring teams from the Campion School scored victories against new hosts and rivals St Andrew's College, Christchurch.

Both sides made too many errors, and for the 1st XV they were almost very costly, as it took two tries in the final minutes to regain the lead they had forfeited early in the second half.

match Report

The first team gave a thoroughly Jeckyl and Hyde performance as they dominated the game, had a host of chances, scored seven tries and yet needed an inspired final five minutes to claw back to victory when they were eight points down. John Beith had early in the game shown the physical power that should have inspired his team-mates, but somehow their early domination of their opponents' half was squandered through bad passing, catching or decision-making. St Andrew's showed what they could do after fifteen minutes by surging upfield and brushing aside some weak tackling to open with a converted try. This spurred the Campion students to a good spell of controlled rugby. On the defensive, St Andrew's had a kick knocked down by Davies who romped through for a try which Roberts converted. Turner started to show his paces and his was the second try as he drove past the Christchurch defenders. Roberts converted this and the Beith try that capped a good handling move shortly afterwards. 21-7 ahead and Campion surged upfield again for what should have been the killer score. Instead, as has happened too often on their tour, a misplaced pass straight to a defender opened the way for a St Andrew's try This seemed to knock the stuffing out of the Hornchurch students who conceded two tries in the final five minutes of the half.

Both were converted and the score was a surprising 21 - 26 to St Andrew's.

The second half saw further tries exchanged as both sides sought to establish themselves as the dominant force. Campion had already spurned some openings established by their driving pack when an extravagant dummy was bought in midfield and St Andrew's extended their lead with an unconverted try. Thinking their backs could now win the game for them St Andrew's started to run the ball at every opportunity, even in their own dead ball area, but Campion turned over possession, winning a 5 metre scrum when man-of-the-match Turner held their centre in possession. Beith scored from the ensuing scrum, proving too strong for the defence. But errors continued to haunt the Campion side, and a heel against the head sparked a cross-field move that gave St Andrew's an overlap to score another unconverted try. In the twenty-eighth minute of the half Ngan broke from a powerful drive to score the try that left Campion within range at 33 - 36, but St Andrew's appeared to have won the game when Lunan was illegally pushed off the ball as he retreated to pick up a grubber kick.

Yet the Campion side, wearing their touring colours of white and black, showed great self-belief and spirit as they rallied in the dying moments of the game. A drive into the corner saw Murphy pick up and score an unconverted try. Urged on by their unflagging supporters, Campion went upfield from the ensuing kick-off, Finn saw a gap, sold the St Andrew's defence a dummy and dived joyously over for Whitehead to convert his try as the final whistle blew.

A breathless victory at 45 - 41! Campion now need to reduce their error rate and work hard together to achieve a fifth win in the final match of the tour in Toowoomba.

Man of Match: XX Turner

2nd XV

Match Result: 29-0 (W)

match Report

The second team played first on a beautiful sunny day, with a slight wind blowing down the pitch. Playing against the wind Campion were clearly the better side, but failed to capitalise on their possession and opportunities. Riordan scored a try that Joughin converted, and St Andrew's had a player sin-binned for a high tackle on Gorman as he made progress in midfield. Finally Joughin crossed for an unconverted try to give the Essex boys a 12 - 0 interval lead. Strong words from the coaching team inspired a period of better play and Campion pressure was rewarded with an Edwards try after St Andrew's dropped a pass near their own line. Joughin converted this and some minutes later kicked a penalty confidently for a 22 - 0 lead. Then the game became scrappy and niggly, as both teams briefly lost patience with each other and with the referee. Gorman went on a good run but was brought down in a crunching tackle that also destroyed one of the touch flags.

In the final ten minutes Campion again mounted lasting pressure and after a series of penalties man-of-the-match Joughin spotted a gap from a tap penalty five metres out and went over for his second try, which he himself converted.

The team agreed that they should have made more from their possession. They dominated both the line-outs and the scrums and more than held their own in the loose, but a casual element seemed to enter their thinking and they will need greater concentration and more complete commitment if they are to triumph in the tour's climactic game against Downlands later in the week. (Your roving reporter wishes to note that a try previously accredited to Turnage in an earlier report was actually scored by Besley. At least he might stop pestering me now!)

Man of Match: David Joughin
