MATCH 6 - Downlands College, Toowoomba

1st XV: CAMPION 6:14 Downlands College (L)

Downlands College maintained their unbeaten record against visiting English schoolboy teams when they defeated Campion 14-6 at Downlands Oval yesterday. In recent years, Downlands have conquered Millhill and Durham and yesterday Campion suffered a similar fate to their predecessors.

Despite the windy conditions, both teams produced first class rugby and the winning margin was not really indicative of the closeness of the game.

Downlands led 8-6 at half-time and, had the visitors been successful with a penalty attempt midway through the second half, they may well have won. The match was highlighted by some spectacular tries, none better than that of winger Rod Berwicks to seal victory for Downlands.

From the home teams' 22 metre line. Gerry Stevens threw a superb cut-out pass to winger Peter Allen who in turn put Berwick on his way for a 55 metre dash to the try-line. Stevens then mastered the wind to kick a magnificent goal from the sidelines.

Campion's forwards pack were extremely impressive, showing excellent skills with lock John Green in particular outstanding. Green, an Under 18 English schoolboy representative, dominated line-outs. and his general play was rewarded when he crossed for his team's only try.

2nd xv: CAMPION 0:13 Downlands College (L)

Downlands completed the double for the day when the Second XV defeated Campion’s second team 13-0.

This also was a thoroughly entertaining match, with fullback Anthony O'Donohue, halfback Nick Brennan and captain Joe Flynn, until he was replaced through injury, Dowland's best.

The tourists have already had wins over West Australia, South Australia and Victoria, with their only loss before yesterday being to Knox College, Sydney.

They leave today for Townsville and conclude their month-long Australia visit with a game against Brisbane State High before heading home via a five-day stopover in Hong Kong.

English schoolboys reveal rugby class

THE touring English schoolboys rugby teams gave two of Townsville's most accomplished rugby schools a lesson yesterday.

The Campion College First XV from Essex ran away to a 25-9 win over Townsville Grammar in the main game at Hugh Street and the tourists Second XV easily accounted for Ignatius Park's First XV, 14-4.

The tourists forward pack proved the difference in both encounters.

1st XV: CAMPION 25-9 Townsville Grammar (W)

In the main game, Townsville Grammar — starved of possession —held the visitors to a half-time scoreline of 12-6 .

However, in the second stanza, the experience of the Campion forward pack began to take toll. Lineout ball proved elusive for Grammar as Campion's Steven Ives and Adam Williams outjumped their opponents. Scrum possession was equal, but Campion's control in the second row gave their backs much cleaner ball. The tourists dominance in tight play was displayed late in the second half when the Campion forwards stormed Grammar's line and scored a classic push-over try through lock Adam Williams.

The tussle between Queensland representative Sam Scott-Young and English schoolboy international John Green was a highlight of the game.

Both back lines squandered a number of scoring opportunities as the ball hit the deck with monotonous regularity.

2nd xv: CAMPION 14:4 Ignatius Park College (W)

At Ignatius Park's home ground, the Campion Second XV scored three tries to one. The well-drilled Campion forward pack again proved too powerful for the locals.

The tourists leave for Brisbane tomorrow to prepare for the final and probably toughest game of a four-week tour against Brisbane State High on Sunday.

tour memories from Father Ninian 

Tour No. 5 was to Australia.

The distances were so great we had to fly from city to city, so my memory is of endless waits at every major airport in Australia.

A very different country, a different way of life, even a different outlook on life.

Mass, at lunchtime, in the new, one and a half million dollar sports hall at Knox College in Sydney: John Knox must have been turning in his grave. Knox had 700 pupils, two rugby pitches and ran 35 school teams on a Saturday. They were surprised that we were surprised; 

St.Josephs in Sydney had fifty school teams.

Arrival at Downland School to find that the local television station had sent a crew to interview J.D., as visiting coach, on his views on the match, Australia and the world in general.

Townsville, in northern Queensland, where my second XV kicked off at 2pm with the temperature in the eighties. Every time the game stopped, a mad dash on with bottles of water to drink and buckets of water to duck one's head in. The first XV played in the evening: it was cooler, but the game was played on a bone dry, sandy pitch; every time the scrum went down a cloud of sand rose so thickly that the scrum just disappeared from view.

Hazlitt's essay 'On a Sundial' with the motto 'horas non numero nisi serenas': "should we remember the happy and ignore the sad," or does honesty compel one to say that the referee in our last game at Brisbane left me with an overwhelming desire never to go back.

Perhaps it is better to remember the journey home via Hong Kong.
